AUDITION SCRIPTS
Although there is no dialogue in this show, if you are auditioning for the following parts, FANTINE, JAVERT, MARIUS, EPONINE, COSETTE & VALJEAN, to help me assess you please look through these scripts although we may not have time to use them
FANTINE - (Fantine is lying in the snow having been attacked by Bamatabois - she is very ill, coughs a lot and has been hurt by Bamatabois and is sobbing)
JAVERT - (to his Sergeant) I'll deal with this (cross to sobbing Fantine)
FANTINE - (she grabs his coat) It's not my fault - HE started it.
JAVERT - (knocking her away) On your feet - You are under arrest.
FANTINE - Arrest?
JAVERT - Have her taken to the prison - you'll get six months.
FANTINE - Six months! - What about Cosette - what'll happen to her? (beside herself with anguish)
JAVERT - (abstracted) Who is Cosette?
FANTINE - My daughter - if I don't send the Thenardier's money - they'll turn her out.
JAVERT - Is you daughter here in Montreuil?
FANTINE - No ...but...
JAVERT - Then she is no concern of mine. - Take her away.
FANTINE - Inspector - Inspector please - please - listen to my side. I know I hit the gentleman - I know I was wrong - but did he have the right to put snow down my dress - especially as it the only one I have and I need it for work. (She is pleading for her child's life and her work is as a prostitute) I'm sorry I don't mean to argue. It won't happen again - Inspector please be merciful.
JAVERT - All right - I have listened to your side - you still get six months.
VALJEAN - (he has been listening to all this) One moment Inspector.
JAVERT - M'sieur Le Mayor!
FANTINE - (breaks free and crosses to Valjean) You did this to me - you fired me - (spits in his face)
JAVERT - HOLD HER!
VALJEAN - Let her go
JAVERT - What!!
VALJEAN - Let me explain Inspector - I was crossing the square when you arrested her - I asked people what had happened and they said it was entirely the fault of the man who attacked her - in fact her should be under arrest - now you have heard this new evidence I want you to release her.
FANTINE - He said I can go. He is the Mayor isn't he? Well I'll be going then, I won't be any bother to anyone.
JAVERT - Sergeant - who said she can go?
VALJEAN - I did. I am the final judicial authority here in Montreuil and I say she is innocent.
JAVERT - She spat on you!
VALJEAN - She was upset - I forgive her.
JAVERT - She insulted you - in front of my men -she defiled you.
VALJEAN - That is my concern inspector.
JAVERT - No sir you are wrong. You M'sieur Le Mayor are the personification of order, morality - government - in fact the whole of society. You don't have the right to forgive her and debase all of that. You don't have the authority to destroy justice.
VALJEAN - I do have the authority inspector - under articles 9 and 6 of the criminal code I order her release - Sergeant.
JAVERT - I cannot allow that M'sieur - I was there - she attacked a man.
VALJEAN - The decision is mine - she is free.
JAVERT - She will not go free while I am in charge of this post.
VALJEAN - In that case under article 3 you are relieved of your post until morning. You are dismissed Inspector. .....leave........NOW!............you are free to go (to Fantine)
Marius and Cosette audition script
MARIUS - (Marius has been told by Eponine where Cosette lives and is outside her gate waiting to catch a sight of her - she enters the garden but turns to go) No Mademoiselle No - don't go - wait Cosette - Cosette (he whispers this)
COSETTE - (she runs to the gate) How do you know my name M'sieur?
MARIUS - I believe this is yours. (he holds her lace hanky)
COSETTE - I looked everywhere for it - and you found it.
MARIUS - At the Chateau de Luxembourg - I often walk there - in the grounds in hope of seeing you again - I never did.
COSETTE - (Pause) This is my garden now - it's all mine - it's far from being finished but...
MARIUS - It's really quite beautiful as it is - but - if you wish me to give you an informed opinion - you should let me in.
COSETTE - I'm afraid that can't be done - I don't have the key to the gate.
MARIUS - Then I will have to climb it - I would do anything to be near you - I would have turned Paris inside out to find you - I would have searched the mountains - the woods - the oceans.
COSETTE - But why?
MARIUS - Because - I love you.
COSETTE - But you don't even know who I am.
Valjean calls for Cosette offstage.
COSETTE - I really have to go back in.
MARIUS - I will keep this as a hostage - until we meet.
COSETTE - When will that be?
MARIUS - You decide.
COSETTE - Tomorrow - at dark.
EPONINE AND COSETTE AUDITION SCRIPT
EPONINE - (Cosette is in the garden cutting flowers - she is behind locked gates and Eponine has found where she lives - she calls through the gate to Cosette) M'moiselle - Eh - M'moiselle - Come 'ere - come on - don't be scared - don't you remember me? - Thenardier - 'Ponine Thenardier - How could you forget? - Eponine! - You're scared - good - that means you begin to remember - I sure played around with you - I was mean but you were so easy to be mean to - always crying but never a scream - never a complaint.
COSETTE - (she moves to the gate cautiously) Yes I do recognise you now.- what do you want from me?
EPONINE - (Eponine is playing with her - she knows Marius is in love with Cosette) I'm starving - starving to death - I'm the tadpole now and you the little lady.
COSETTE - How did you find me?
EPONINE - By chance - (this is a lie) I've got nothing to do now but walk around all day - What are you going to do with that knife - stab me.
COSETTE - You don't frighten me any more - there is a gate between us.
EPONINE - Yes there is a gate - and you are going to open it - aren't you?
COSETTE - Why would I?
EPONINE - Because you are kind and you are going to give me a little something.
COSETTE - I'm not to let anyone in. You had better go now - if my Father sees you - after what you and yours did to him!!!
EPONINE - So your old man is not a Saint is he? All right I will go but it will be tit for tat.
